Egyptian Center of Evidence Based Medicine

The objective of the ECEBM is to develop, teach and promote evidence-based health care and provide support and resources to practitioners and consumers.

Based on an awareness of the limitations of traditional determinants of clinical decisions, a new paradigm for medical practice has arisen. Evidence-based medicine deals directly with the uncertainties of clinical medicine and has the potential for transforming the education and practice of the next generation of physicians. These physicians will continue to face an exploding volume of literature, rapid introduction of new technologies, deepening concern about burgeoning medical costs, and increasing attention to the quality and outcomes of medical care. The likelihood that evidence-based medicine can help ameliorate these problems should encourage its dissemination. Evidence-based medicine will require new skills for the physician, skills which residency programs should be equipped to teach. While strategies for inculcating the principles of evidence-based medicine remain to be refined, initial experience has revealed a number of effective approaches. Incorporating these practices into postgraduate medical education, and continuing to work on their further development, will result in more rapid dissemination and integration of the new paradigm into medical practice. THe ECEBM aims to promote a more rapid dissemination and integration of evidence into medical practice .

Evidence Based Medicine

Evidence-based medicine is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence-based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.

Individual clinical expertise

By individual clinical expertise we mean the proficiency and judgment that individual clinicians acquire through clinical experience and clinical practice. Increased expertise is reflected in many ways, but especially in more effective and efficient diagnosis and in the more thoughtful identification and compassionate use of individual patients' predicaments, rights, and preferences in making clinical decisions about their care.

Best available external clinical evidence

By best available external clinical evidence we mean clinically relevant research, often from the basic sciences of medicine, but especially from patient centered clinical research into the accuracy and precision of diagnostic tests, the power of prognostic markers, and the efficacy and safety of therapeutic, rehabilitative, and preventive regimens.

External clinical evidence both invalidates traditionally  accepted diagnostic tests and interventions and replaces them with updated and sound ones that are more accurate, more efficacious, and safer.

Egyptian Cochrane network

The Egyptian Cochrane network (ECn) is a network of the Egyptian contributors to the Cochrane Collaboration. It is a network of dedicated volunteers. The primary role is to provide an opportunity for contributors to The Cochrane Collaboration in Egypt to work together more closely, to support each other and to build on this enthusiasm to expand Cochrane Collaboration activity in Egypt.

The Cochrane Collaboration is an international not-for-profit and independent organization, dedicated to making up-to-date, accurate information about the effects of healthcare readily available worldwide. It produces and disseminates systematic reviews of healthcare interventions and promotes the search for evidence in the form of clinical trials and other studies of interventions.

ECn Core Functions

  1. To provide or facilitate training and support for review authors, editors, hand-searchers and other contributors to The Cochrane Collaboration.
  2. To assist in finding funding for activities related to preparing, maintaining and promoting accessibility to Cochrane reviews.
  3. To promote accessibility to The Cochrane Library to healthcare professionals, patients and others, e.g. by pursuing a national subscription for Egypt and facilitating translations of the output of The Cochrane Collaboration.
  4. To hand-search healthcare journals and to submit the search results to the Collaborations trial database.

In order to fulfill these core functions, ECn will be required to:

  1. ensure effective and efficient communication between members of the network and others in The Cochrane Collaboration
  2. maintain a description of the networks activities
  3. ensure sustainability and continuity of the network
